While on holiday, you can easily become lazy as you have a lot of free time to yourself. At this period, you could set a lot of plans and in the end you find out you didn’t start anything not to talk of finishing.

  • Learn hand skills

The holiday period gives you enough free time to go out and learn a skill and if you already have one, you can still want to use this period to learn a new skill. There are many skills you can learn as a student that will help you even in school and after school.

You can brainstorm on the one you have passion for or that is related to your career. This skill(s) you learn could fetch you some money while in school for your up-keep and you don’t have to wait for anyone to send or give you money. Some of the skills you could learn are:

  • Graphics designing
  • Hairdressing
  • Fashion designing
  • Catering and baking
  • Fixing of phones and computers
  • Ponder over the just concluded semester or session

You can use your holiday period to look back at the previous semester and try to pinpoint what you did and didn’t do well. You have to ask yourself some questions about how the semester or session went and if you did well or not.

Ask yourself:

  • How did the semester go?
  • Did you perform well or not?
  • Where did you do well and where you are lagging?
  • What will you do to improve next semester?

All these questions will help you prepare yourself for the next semester and on how to improve and do better.

  • Set goals and prepare for the next semester

After reflecting on the previous semester and figuring out what you did well and didn’t do well; you now have to set your goals for the next semester. Prepare yourself for what lies ahead and also train yourself to be self-disciplined so as to achieve your set goal.

You wouldn’t want your next semester to be like the previous or just concluded semester. Therefore, you have to use this break to set your goals and set clear goals. Outline what you want to do and what you would love to achieve for the coming semester.

It could be studying for four (4) hours everyday after school or studying before going to school.

  • Take out time to understand yourself better

This holiday period is also an opportunity for you to understand yourself more and see how best to improve. Use this period to set life goals and not just school goals for yourself.

Read books and articles about goal setting and how to set achievable goals. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What do you really want?
  • Why do you want what you want?
  • How can you achieve what you want?
  • How would you feel if you don’t live up to expectation and also how your life affects others?
  • Read for the next semester

In your effort to prepare for the next semester, you can also start to read ahead for the next semester. This will help you to understand better and also stay ahead of the class when the new semester begins.

You can also take this period to study the subjects or courses where you didn’t do well in the previous semester and practice questions on them.

You have a lot of free time to do this so snap out of your laziness and start studying. I am not saying you should use your whole day to study but have a study schedule as you are on holiday because you have enough time to do it compared to during school time.

  • Get a job

Getting a job doesn’t mean you should get a tedious and strenuous jobs. The job is just to get little earnings that will support you for the next semester. The money you earn from the job would go a long way in getting you some items in preparation for the semester ahead like text books, groceries etc.

Another important thing is that you mustn’t necessarily work for the money; you could take up a job in you in your field of study or career so as to gain more knowledge. The earning is important and so is the learning.

So do well to get a job to support your finance and also gather knowledge and working experience that you can add to your CV to improve its quality.

  • Learn behavioral skills

We have encouraged you to learn hand skills and it is equally important that you learn behavioral skills like self-discipline, time management, self-confidence etc.

All these skills are very important for you to excel in our academics and also in life generally. During this holiday period, you could take out time to train yourself to be self-disciplined (control your ability and feelings) and also be conscious of time.

Train yourself to make budgets and stick to them. This is a period where you can try to save every money that comes into your purse as you might be with your family and don’t need to cater for yourself. This will help you prepare for the semester or session ahead and also help you manage your finance properly.

  • Attend entrepreneurship classes or seminars

It is not new that students and young adults are being encouraged to become entrepreneurs and it is very important for students to start nurturing their minds to become job creators instead of job seekers.

So you should use your holiday period to attend entrepreneurship classes or seminars so as to learn a thing or two about how to set up a business and a successful business too.

This will help prepare you for either being a student entrepreneur or being an entrepreneur after school.

  • Visit educational centres

This is one activity you can do alone or even with your friends to make it exciting but in hanging out with your friends, you shouldn’t lose sight of the purpose of the visit to the educational centres like museums, newspaper companies, TV stations and many other places where you can get quality information and knowledge.

Instead of visiting the beach, eatery or park, you can decide to go to these educational centres to help broaden your horizons and open your mind to fresh knowledge.

The boredom that comes along with the holiday can make you start thinking of what to do with the free time. Well, you can try to pick up a new hobby and let it be something that is interesting and productive. It could be:
